Under the Bushes Under the Stars

Under the Bushes Under the Stars is the ninth Guided by Voices album and the last until Let's Go Eat the Factory in 2012 to feature Tobin Sprout, Mitch Mitchell and Kevin Fennell alongside Pollard. It was assembled from the band's first 24-track studio sessions, after sessions for a concept album called The Power of Suck were aborted. Pollard said the record had a loose concept around good versus evil and materialism. He insisted on keeping lo-fi techniques such as singing through guitar amplifiers. The sessions were spread across at least four studios and as many sets of producers,.

The last six tracks on the CD form a separate 12-inch EP in the vinyl edition. They were added to the CD at the request of Matador executives who regretted leaving them out. Four songs are credited to Sprout, To Remake the Young Flyer, The Perfect Life, Atom Eyes and It's Like Soul Man, and Sheetkickers is credited to Jim Pollard and Robert Pollard. The Official Ironmen Rally Song and Cut-Out Witch were the singles. A 1998 edition added Finks and The Finest Joke Is Upon Us.
