The Pearl is credited to Eno and Budd and sits third on the second side of the 1984 album. Eno and Lanois produced it at Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton, Ontario, where most of the record was cut in a two-week session while the three men shared a house and worked every day. Budd said the album hung together better than Plateaux, with all its pieces seeming to belong. The title track was later chosen for the retrospective Wind in Lonely Fences in 2013.
Budd played The Pearl alone at the Lanzarote Music Festival in December 1989, a performance released in 1995 on Agua. The upload in the hypersongs web is the 1984 studio recording in its 2005 remaster.
