Made at The Manor early in 1974, it was Lindsay Cooper's first album with the band. Its second side was built by what the band called studio composition: improvising to tape, then looping, layering and changing the speed of what they had played. Bittern Storm over Ulm is based on the Yardbirds' Got to Hurry, and the record is dedicated to Robert Wyatt and Uli Trepte. Robert Christgau graded it A-minus, Steve Lake called it a great record, and in 2014 Fact ranked it fifteenth among the albums of the 1970s.
