Love began writing the songs as the follow-up to her 2004 solo album America's Sweetheart. Sessions started in 2006 with a working title of How Dirty Girls Get Clean, and she later scrapped that material and wrote new songs with the guitarist Micko Larkin. She then hired Michael Beinhorn to produce, and Larkin took over as producer after Beinhorn left. In 2009 it was announced as a Hole record, with Larkin, bassist Shawn Dailey and drummer Stu Fisher.
Mercury released it in April 2010. Reviews were mixed. Rolling Stone gave it three stars out of five, and Robert Christgau gave it an A minus. Erlandson disputed the use of the band name before release. Love later retired the Hole name.
