Over and Over

The chant that made The Warning: NME's single and track of 2006, released twice in Britain and still the song the band play most.

The song reached listeners well before the album. It first surfaced in December 2004 on a studio mix by Radio Soulwax, which was broadcast in Australia, on BBC Radio 1 as an Essential Mix and in Belgium on Studio Brussel. DFA and Astralwerks issued it in the United States on 29 November 2005, with a DFA remix of (Just Like We) Breakdown on the B-side. EMI released it in Britain on 27 February 2006 and again on 9 October 2006. The first release reached 32 in March and the second peaked at 27 in October. It reached 44 in Ireland.

Pitchfork's Sean Fennessey described it as built on the best kind of chant, one you can remember, with a skulking guitar and handclaps. NME called it an insanely catchy kitchen-sink club-stomper and named it both single and track of the year for 2006, and in 2011 placed it seventh on its list of the 150 best tracks of the previous fifteen years. Taylor said the NME honour was a very nice thing to happen after a year of working on the record. AllMusic compared the pulsing groove to Liquid Liquid and the Rapture. Pitchfork ranked it 16th among the songs of 2006 and 45th on its decade-end list in 2009. The Observer later quoted its refrain about a monkey with a miniature cymbal as an example of how it became ingrained in pop culture.

Singles and video

The first CD carried A Family in Here, a Justus Koehncke remix and the video, and the 7-inch paired the song with The Girl In Me. The second release added Grubbs on one CD and Sexual Healing with a Mock and Toof dub on the other, and a 12-inch collected Maurice Fulton and Mock and Toof dubs. Nima Nourizadeh directed the video, which puts the band on a stylized green screen stage with bored-looking assistants in green bodysuits holding props. It was preloaded on every first-generation Zune 30. Wallzo and Owen Clarke designed the cover. The song was nominated for an Ivor Novello award in 2007 and was used in the American Dad episode Bazooka Steve in 2017.

Live

It has 409 recorded performances, more than any other Hot Chip song. It was one of four songs in their NPR Tiny Desk set in 2024, alongside Boy from School, Look at Where We Are and Ready for the Floor.
