Recorded at Rockfield with Poli Palmer producing and Gary Martin engineering, it came in a John Pasche sleeve for Gull. Songwriting was split between Boyle, Laurence Scott and Hugh Hopper, whose pieces grew out of the Monster Band demos he had made after leaving Soft Machine. Boyle and Nigel Morris shared credit for Spanish Sun. In the United States it came out on Gull through Motown.

Graham Thomas of The Progressive Aspect called it a definite step forward. Phil Aston of Now Spinning found it more aggressive and more rock-orientated than the debut, Roger Batty of Musique Machine heard more groove and melody, and Henri Strik singled out the roar of Hopper's fuzz bass. David Randall felt the extra Boyle writing pushed it toward Mahavishnu territory.

It has been reissued many times: on CD by Line in 1987, paired with the debut by See For Miles in 1995, in Japan in 2005 and 2022, as a 2011 Esoteric remaster by Paschal Byrne with notes by Sid Smith, and as the second disc of Upward Curve in 2026.
