Hendrix recorded the shows to settle a contract dispute with the former manager Ed Chalpin and PPX, with Capitol as distributor. The trio of Hendrix, Cox on bass and Miles on drums played four shows over two nights, and the sound engineer Wally Heider recorded them. Twenty-four songs were played across the four shows, for 47 recorded versions, and there were no set lists. Hendrix and Kramer began choosing tracks on 12 January 1970 at Juggy Sound Studios. Hendrix is credited as producer under the name Heaven Research.
Hendrix wrote Who Knows, Machine Gun, Power to Love and Message of Love. Miles wrote and sang Changes and We Gotta Live Together. Machine Gun had grown into an extended improvisation by the time of the shows, and four recordings of it were among the final choices. It runs 12:38, the longest track on the record.
Capitol released it in the US on 25 March 1970. It entered the Billboard chart at 18 and peaked at five over 61 weeks. Track issued it in Britain on 12 June 1970, where it reached six. The RIAA certified it gold on 3 June 1970 and double platinum in 1998, and it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2018. Rolling Stone's Gary von Tersch criticised the vocals and Miles's drumming in 1970 but praised the guitar, and AllMusic's Sean Westergaard called it one of the best live albums. Digital Underground sampled Who Knows on The Way We Swing in 1990.
