Cab Calloway and His Orchestra recorded Jumpin' Jive on 17 July 1939, and it became one of the big records of the swing era, reaching number two and selling over a million copies. Calloway performed it with the Nicholas Brothers' famous staircase dance in the 1943 film Stormy Weather. The song is a showcase for hep-talk, the jive slang Calloway made a style of its own.
Jackson's version, the seventh track on Joe Jackson's Jumpin' Jive, was recorded at Basing Street in May 1981 with his seven-piece swing band and released as a single in June, credited to the band name, with Knock Me a Kiss on the B-side. It reached forty-three in Britain and thirty-two in New Zealand. The band played it through the 1981 tour and Jackson kept it in his sets into the late 1980s; setlist.fm logs the last performance at Ahoy in Rotterdam in November 1989. A live version is on Live 1980/86.
The upload in the hypersongs web is the remastered edition A&M issued when the late-1990s swing revival brought the album back into print.
