Released on 17 February 1975 in the United States and a few days later in the UK, it is a covers album of rock and roll songs from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Recording was spread across two sessions: Phil Spector produced sessions in October 1973 at A&M Studios, and Lennon produced sessions from 21 October 1974 at the Record Plant East in New York, finishing the tracks in a few days.

The cover photograph by Jurgen Vollmer was taken in Hamburg and shows Lennon in a doorway. It reached number 6 in both Britain and the United States and later went gold in both. "Stand by Me" was the single, peaking at 20 in the US and 30 in the UK. The Rolling Stone Album Guide wrote that Lennon "lends dignity to these classics".
