Most of it was recorded over three days at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. A few tracks come from elsewhere: Souvenirs from an Austin City Limits taping with Steve Goodman, Fish and Whistle and Speed of the Sound of Loneliness with a band, and Angel from Montgomery from Goodman's memorial concert at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago in January 1985, with Bonnie Raitt, David Bromberg and Johnny Lee Schell. Prine said Oh Boy simply needed product. AllMusic heard a very entertaining live performer at his intimate best. It was dedicated to his mother, Verna Prine, and earned a Grammy nomination.
