Many songs on the album carry political references, broad or specific, and the title song refers both to his habit of wearing black on stage and to the troubled times, implying the Vietnam War. The name became the informal nickname the public gave him. Two tracks were released as singles, Man in Black and Singin' in Vietnam Talkin' Blues, the first reaching number three on the country chart.
