Lee's Mexican-American grandfather would ask her how much she loved him and accept only one answer: con todo el mundo, with all the world. Lee has described Khruangbin as the world the band created. The basic tracks were played live in the barn, with no punch-ins there, and overdubs were added at SugarHill in Houston.
The record looks to Spain and the Middle East, Iran above all, along with Stax soul, dub and reggae. Speer listened to Googoosh more than anyone while making it. The band told NPR that August 10 was built by listening backwards to August Twelve, their first song, that Shades of Man ends with two Iranian women saying the band's name, that Rules draws on the Persian guitarist Kourosh Yaghmaei, that A Hymn was written at the church where Speer and Johnson met, and that Friday Morning is their first love song.
Maria También and Friday Morning were the singles. Metacritic's score is 78, and Pitchfork's Erin MacLeod heard a psychedelic mood suspended between continents and eras. It went silver in the UK, and in 2019 the band remade it in dub as Hasta El Cielo.
