Hütter and Karl Bartos wrote the music and Hütter and Emil Schult the lyrics. It came out as a single in Britain in June 1981, backed with The Model, and reached number 36. In December 1981 the two songs were reissued as a double A side that reached number one in February 1982. Kraftwerk re-recorded the song for The Mix in 1991. Pitchfork's Tom Ewing wrote that its singer is lonely and muted amid some of the most delicately gorgeous synthwork the band ever made. The Guardian described Hütter seeking a data date, effectively predicting online dating, and Billboard called it a straight-faced synth-pop quasi-ballad with a gorgeously moaning synth line.

Coldplay's Talk, from X&Y (2005), is built on the melody. Chris Martin recalled in Q in 2007 that he sent a letter through the lawyers asking for approval and received a handwritten reply that said "yes." La Roux used the main riff in I'm Not Your Toy in 2009. Pitchfork ranked the song 53rd among the best songs of the 1980s, and Billboard placed it 54th on its 2025 list of the 100 best dance songs of all time. The BBC Radio 4 programme Soul Music devoted an episode to it in January 2018, on how the album Computer World changed people's lives, with Andy McCluskey of OMD and Greg Broussard, known as Egyptian Lover, among the contributors. The band played it at the Teatro Apollo in Florence on 19 May 1981.
