Coda came out on 26 November 1982, almost two years after the band ended, and it cleared out nearly all the leftover tracks from the studio sessions of the 1960s and 1970s. Atlantic counted it as the studio album that Swan Song still owed the label. Page said it was released because so many bootlegs were circulating that the band decided it might as well put out the rest of its studio material, and the word coda was chosen as the passage that ends a piece.
We're Gonna Groove, a Ben E. King cover, and I Can't Quit You Baby come from the Royal Albert Hall concert of January 1970, with the audience sound removed. Poor Tom is a Led Zeppelin III outtake from Olympic in June 1970, and Walter's Walk was recorded in April and May 1972 in the Houses of the Holy sessions. Ozone Baby, Darlene and Wearing and Tearing were cut at Polar Studios in Stockholm in November 1978. Wearing and Tearing was written as a reaction to punk, and a planned single for the 1979 Knebworth shows was cancelled at the last minute. Bonzo's Montreux, recorded at Mountain Studios in Montreux in September 1976, is a Bonham drum piece with electronic treatments added by Page.
Kurt Loder in Rolling Stone called it a resounding farewell in 1983, while Julian Marszalek of The Quietus wrote that it has always been regarded as the band's weakest release. A 2015 reissue added discs of extra material, including If It Keeps On Raining, Sugar Mama, Four Hands, St. Tristan's Sword and Desire, and recordings made with an orchestra in Bombay in 1972. Pitchfork's Mark Richardson picked Hey Hey What Can I Do as one of the band's best single songs.
