The band regarded Optimo as the main track of the EP and named the record after it. Principato said the song was largely finished before the session, though some touches, such as the backwards cowbell at the start, were found in the moment. The Village Voice called it furious punk-samba, and RBMA praised its batucada-like beat and its perfect amount of cowbell.

It became a favorite of Larry Levan, Tony Humphries, Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. Carl Craig first heard it at the Music Institute in Detroit in 1988, and said it made James Brown's jungle music more tribal. JD Twitch and JG Wilkes named their Glasgow DJ duo and their weekly Sub Club night after it. It is in The Pitchfork 500 and on Soul Jazz's New York Noise, and has been remixed by Matthew Dear, Optimo and DJ Sample. In 2024 DFA released an unreleased instrumental version mixed by Optimo, and it was danced as a samba on Italy's Dancing with the Stars in 2021. The reunited band closed their Madison Square Garden set with it in 2011.

The upload in the hypersongs web is the 2008 Domino remaster of the EP recording, from Slip In And Out Of Phenomenon.
