Recorded at The Garden in Shoreditch, a studio built by John Foxx, where most of Cole's guitars went straight into the Amek desk with no amplifier. Perfect Skin and Forest Fire came from an early session, and the rest were made in about a month in the summer of 1984. Cole sang the high parts on Patience in a small overdub room at Abbey Road. Claire from Orange Juice sang uncredited backing vocals on Speedboat, whose bassline Cole later realized came from Orange Juice's What Presence?. Strings were arranged by Anne Dudley with the band, and for the North American Geffen release Ric Ocasek remixed three tracks.

It reached 13 in the UK and went gold, with singles Perfect Skin, Forest Fire and Rattlesnakes. Mojo called it a timeless pop album in 2004, and Donegan remembered it being finished in a month. A two-disc deluxe edition in 2004 added demos, BBC sessions, live tracks and B-sides, and Ian Jones remastered it from the original tapes at Abbey Road in 2015.
