By mid-1968 Lee was the only remaining member of the Forever Changes line-up. He put together the guitarist Jay Donnellan, the drummer George Suranovich and the bassist Frank Fayad, rehearsed at his house, and paid to rent equipment from Wally Heider Studios for recording in Hollywood. Basic tracks were cut in September 1968, with Robert Montgomery and further overdubs done at Elektra Sound Recorders that October. The group recorded 27 songs. Holzman chose ten for Four Sail, and the rest came out in December 1969 as the double album Out Here on Blue Thumb.
Lee explained in 2002 that the title meant a sign on a lawn, and that it was really Love for Sale, because he had had enough of Elektra. Eugene Chadbourne of AllMusic heard feeling and emotional fervor in the tracks, and in 2019 Bob Stanley wrote in Record Collector that people had dismissed the record because it did not sound like a sequel to Forever Changes. In 2014 NME placed it at number 1 on its list of 101 albums to hear before you die.
