M.I.A. released the mixtape independently in December 2004 as a teaser for her debut album. It was produced by M.I.A. and Diplo and held rough mixes of tracks from Arular mashed up with songs by other artists. It spread by word of mouth. Pitchfork called it a much-loved mixtape collaboration with Diplo. In early 2005, after Arular came out, XL put a large collection of fan-made remixes of her work on its website as an online mixtape under the title Online Piracy Funds Terrorism.
