The soundtrack to the 1972 film of the same name, released on Tamla on 8 December 1972. It was the first album written and produced entirely by Gaye. He made it at Motown's Hitsville West studio in Hollywood after the company had moved to Los Angeles, with players from the Funk Brothers and from Hamilton Bohannon's band. Gaye composed five versions of the title track: an alternate vocal version used for the film's intro, a single version with one lead vocal, and three instrumentals on the album built around his synthesizer keyboards and saxophone solos.
The title track reached number seven on the pop chart and number four on the soul chart. The album reached number 12 on the Billboard 200 and went gold. The title track plays in the film Se7en and over the opening credits of Four Brothers, and in Captain America: The Winter Soldier a character calls the album essential listening.
