Karmacoma has rap vocals from 3D and Tricky. The Startled Insects, Tim Norfolk and Bob Locke, wrote the music. Its main rhythm is a loop from Alka Yagnik's Aaja Sajan Aaja, and the melodic refrain and the Tuvan throat singing come from the documentary Herders of Mongun Taiga, the same source The KLF used for Dream Time in Lake Jackson. The refrain itself is attributed to Borodin's opera Prince Igor.

It was released on 20 March 1995 as the third and final single from Protection, and Jonathan Glazer directed the video, his first. The single carried remixes including the Portishead Experience Mix, the UNKLE Situation Mix and Almamegretta's Napoli Trip Mix. Tricky remade it as Overcome for his debut album Maxinquaye, with Martina Topley-Bird singing. Massive Attack themselves recorded a version without Tricky, called Fake the Aroma, for War Child's The Help Album.
