Her first album for Maverick placed 27th in the 1993 Pazz & Jop poll. The Washington Post found it one of the year's most intriguing and often unsettling pop records, and Trouser Press heard a dust-clearing blast of imagination. It was nominated for the Grammy for Best R&B Album, and If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night), which reached 73 on the Hot 100, drew two more nominations.
