Hetfield, Ulrich and Burton are credited. Orion was one of only two songs on the album, with The Thing That Should Not Be, that were not finished before the band reached Copenhagen. It is a multipart instrumental built around Burton's bass. It opens with a fade-in bass section processed heavily enough to sound like an orchestra, then moves through mid-tempo riffing and a bass riff at half tempo. The tempo rises in the later part before the music fades out. Burton arranged the middle section, with its moody bass line and layered guitar harmonies.
Pitchfork's Andy O'Connor wrote that Orion and Damage, Inc. were both co-written by Burton and that the pair define the album's mix of beauty and savagery. Orion is the least performed track from the album. The band first played it live on the 2006 tour on which they performed the whole record for its 20th anniversary.
