Marshall Chess said the album began when Mike Bloomfield, in Chicago for a charity concert, said that he and Paul Butterfield wanted to make a record with Muddy Waters. Chess rounded up Donald 'Duck' Dunn, Otis Spann and Sam Lay. The studio disc was recorded at Ter Mar Studios on 21 to 23 April 1969, with Ron Malo engineering, and the live disc on 24 April at the Super Cosmic Joy-Scout Jamboree. Norman Dayron produced all the sessions, and Buddy Miles played drums on the second part of Got My Mojo Working.
It came after Electric Mud, which blues purists had criticized for its psychedelic sound, and was received more favorably because it showcased his classic sound of the 1950s. It reached number 70 on the Billboard 200, the only time he appeared in the top half of that chart. He did not return to the chart until Hard Again in 1977.
