Fine Time was released on 28 November 1988 as the first single from Technique. It was written and partly recorded in Ibiza, and its title came from Morris's note to himself to pay the fine after his car was towed. Sumner said he first tried to sing it in the manner of Donna Summer, but the take sounded to him like someone stuck on the toilet. A sheep bleats at the end, which the band said was a joke about acid fans following the flock.

The press team wanted Vanishing Point as the first single, but the band chose Fine Time. It debuted at number 23 on the UK chart on 4 December 1988 and peaked at number 11. In the United States it reached number three on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and number two on Dance Club Play. Pitchfork's Tom Ewing called it a red herring, a dance music band going dance and a rare gag that stays entertaining. The BBC's review of Technique described its acid-bonkers incomprehensibleness.
