The sleeve says every song was recorded during live performances in 2012 and 2013. Frahm taped the shows over two years on whatever was at hand, including old portable reel-to-reel recorders and cassette decks, and pieced the takes together at Durton, where he mixed the record himself. He said every room he played had its own magic. Mandy Parnell mastered it at Black Saloon Studios in London, and FELD designed the die-cut sleeve. Several pieces were new, while others reworked songs from earlier records.

Metacritic reports universal acclaim, with a score of 90. Resident Advisor gave it 4.5 out of 5, Uncut and PopMatters 9 out of 10, and Pitchfork's Nick Neyland called it an absorbing work full of pensive moments. Geoff Rickly of Thursday wrote in The Talkhouse that Frahm had mastered every rule he had ever broken. A thirteen-track special edition adds Me and Sol.
