A compilation of the 1990 single Sliver and its B-side Dive with demos, outtakes and BBC session recordings, issued on 14 December 1992 in Europe and the next day in the US. Sub Pop sold the early recordings to Geffen for a six-figure amount. The band had meant to call it Cash Cow. Four drummers play on it: Chad Channing, Dan Peters, Dale Crover and Dave Grohl. Cobain painted the cover and is credited as Kurdt Kobain. First pressings carried liner notes from him against homophobia, racism and misogyny.
Turnaround, Molly's Lips and Son of a Gun come from a John Peel session at Maida Vale on 21 October 1990. Been a Son, (New Wave) Polly and Aneurysm come from a Mark Goodier session there on 9 November 1991. It debuted at 51 on the Billboard 200, peaked at 39, sold 500,000 copies in two months and is certified Platinum. In the UK it peaked at 14. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine singled out Aneurysm as possibly the best single song the group recorded.
