Outkast started recording after a $15,000 advance from LaFace in 1993, beginning at the Dungeon, Rico Wade's basement studio, with further sessions at Bosstown, D.A.R.P., Doppler and Purple Dragon in Atlanta. Rico Wade, Ray Murray and Sleepy Brown of Organized Noize produced every track, putting bass, keyboards, guitar and organ ahead of sampling and DJing. More than 30 songs were recorded. The singles were Player's Ball, the title track and Git Up, Git Out.

The album reached number 20 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum on 5 April 1995. Robert Christgau rated it a dud in his Consumer Guide to albums of the 1990s. Pitchfork's Kris Ex, writing in 2018, called it a revelation to hip-hop.
