Track five of Slanted and Enchanted was recorded in January 1991 at Louder Than You Think in Stockton by Malkmus, Kannberg and Gary Young. Like Summer Babe and Perfume-V it uses DADABE tuning. Treble's Casey Burke called it a spoken-word historical monologue, and an earlier Treble review counted its erratic vocal chants among the band's best-known moments. Norman Records heard something of the Fall in its shouted delivery. It was never a single and has no video.
Live
Pavement first played it at Maxwell's in Hoboken on 31 August 1991 and have played it more than 200 times, most recently at the Ryman Auditorium in July 2026. On stage Bob Nastanovich sang the lead, and in 2015 he joined the Nashville tribute band Crooked Corners for one night to sing his lines. A 1992 Brixton Academy performance is on Luxe & Reduxe and on The Secret History, Vol. 1. The upload in the hypersongs web is the original studio recording as reissued on Slanted and Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe in 2002.
