Gabriel wrote demos in New York, partly in Ezrin's apartment. Ezrin led the American rhythm sections and the rock passages, and Gabriel the more European material and the quiet parts. The album reached number 7 in the UK and number 38 in the US, and went gold in the US, the UK, France, Germany and Australia. It won the French Academie Charles Cros prize. Nick Kent of the NME called Solsbury Hill a classic, while Rolling Stone's Stephen Demorest found the songs bore little resemblance to one another.

Solsbury Hill was the last song recorded for the album, and all of its guitars were played by Steve Hunter.

Here Comes the Flood closes the record in a version with strings from the London Symphony Orchestra, arranged by Michael Gibbs.
