Games Without Frontiers is a song on the 1980 album with a vocal contribution by Kate Bush. Its title comes from the television show Jeux sans frontieres, known in Britain as It's a Knockout, which Gabriel found in a television guide. The lyric reads war and diplomacy as children's games. It became his first top 10 hit in the UK at number 4, a position it shares with Sledgehammer as his highest, and reached number 7 in Canada and number 48 in the US.
It was the first time Gabriel used a drum machine on a solo album, the PAiA Programmable Drum Set. Larry Fast played the synthesisers, and for the pre-choruses he borrowed a hocketing technique from Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach. Jerry Marotta recalled that the musicians recorded nine minutes of sound effects, including broken glass and thrown drums, and that the tape was sped up and added at the end of the song. The video uses clips of Olympic events and the film Duck and Cover. The B-side combined Start and I Don't Remember into one track.
