The Pixies entered Q Division in Boston in December 1987 and booked ten working days. 4AD set a budget of $10,000, the total cost came to about $18,000, and Albini's fee was $1,500, with no royalties. He described a modest 16-track studio whose lively, boomy live room suited drums. Amplifiers went first into a corridor and then into a tiled bathroom, and a PZM microphone on the wall picked up the room. Deal's vocals on Where Is My Mind? and Gigantic were recorded in a bathroom for the echo. Studio chatter ends Oh My Golly!, and I'm Amazed opens with Deal telling a story about a teacher. Albini later said the record could have been finished in a week and that they tried experimental things to fill the time, such as running Francis' voice through a guitar amp on Something Against You.

The lyrics draw on the films of Luis Buñuel and David Lynch's Eraserhead. Francis switches to Spanish and Puerto Rico on Oh My Golly! and Vamos, and in Cactus a narrator asks his girlfriend to smear her dress with blood from a cactus cut and mail it. All songs are by Francis except Gigantic, written with Deal, who is credited as Mrs. John Murphy. The cover photograph by Simon Larbalestier shows Isabel Tamen, a Portuguese dancer, topless as a flamenco dancer in front of a crucifix and a torn poster for the film Carmen. Melody Maker reported that the album was first to be called Gigantic, until the band feared the cover would be misread.

Release and reception

4AD released it on 21 March 1988. It spent 60 weeks on the UK indie chart and peaked at number 2, and in the US it was an import until August. Melody Maker and Sounds named it their album of the year, while NME and Record Mirror placed it 10th and 14th. NME's Mark Sinker wrote in March 1988 that the band force the past to sound like them. Robert Christgau thought critics had overrated the band at the time, but in 2003 he found the record audaciously funny and musically prophetic. Pitchfork's 2014 essay said many of its songs feel half-finished, with verses that run long and choruses that repeat odd numbers of times. The RIAA certified it gold in 2005.

Kurt Cobain said in 1992 that he heard songs on it that he had written and thrown out, and he hired Albini to produce Nirvana's In Utero in 1993 largely because of it. Albini wrote harshly of the record in a fanzine in 1991, apologized in 2005, and in 2023 said it was a better record than he had thought at the time.
