Wilson and Harrison wrote it for Fear of a Blank Planet, and the band played it, still untitled, as the fifth song of the unfinished album on their preview tour in late 2006, starting at Cambridge Junction on 13 September. It was recorded with the rest of the album that autumn, but it was dropped, judged underdeveloped and needed out to keep the record under fifty minutes, and Way Out of Here was written in its place. It came out instead on the Nil Recurring EP in September 2007, though on the original vinyl of Fear of a Blank Planet it closes side one, between My Ashes and Anesthetize.

Harrison took its name for his 2015 album, on which Laurence Cottle arranged Porcupine Tree songs for big band. This one appears there paired with Mother and Child Divided.

Live

The band played it 54 times between September 2006 and its final performance on 16 October 2008 at 013 in Tilburg. A version from the Roxy in Atlanta, October 2007, came out as a download in 2010. The upload in the hypersongs web is the band's performance from the Anesthetize concert film, recorded at 013 in Tilburg in October 2008, not the studio track.
