Glory Box rests on a sample of Isaac Hayes's Ike's Rap II, from Black Moses (1971). Barrow came across it by chance on a worn, cheap copy warped by the sun, and was relieved it had not gone too wobbly. Utley found the source lush, and played guitar and Hammond organ over it. Tricky used the same Hayes track at around the same time, and the first pressing of Dummy misprinted the source as Isaac Moods.
Gibbons has said the song is about misunderstanding and frustration with life, and has described it as a case for sexual equality. A glory box is an Australian name for a bride's hope chest, and the phrase never appears in the lyric. The band argued against putting it out as a single because it felt too commercial. The label won, it reached 13 in Britain, and Barrow later conceded that its success paid for houses. Alexander Hemming's video sets Gibbons singing in a 1950s jazz club to watching office couples, with the whole cast apart from the band in drag. The song has played in Stealing Beauty, The Craft and Lord of War.
Live
It is their most-played song, in 162 of the 241 setlists logged on setlist.fm, and an orchestral version recorded at the Roseland Ballroom appears on Roseland NYC Live. Gibbons now sings it in her own concerts, including at Coachella in April 2025. John Martyn, Powderfinger, Gwyneth Herbert and Olivia Colman with Phoebe Waller-Bridge have covered it, and Alessia Cara's Here is built on it. The upload in the hypersongs web is the official video, on the 3:32 single edit rather than the 5:06 album version.
