Recorded in London at Nomis and Marcus studios and mixed at Farmyard Studios in Buckinghamshire, it was produced by Thomas Dolby, except for When Love Breaks Down, which is credited to Phil Thornalley with a Dolby remix. The sleeve nods to Triumph motorcycles and to the 1963 film The Great Escape. In the US it was released on Epic on 3 September 1985 as Two Wheels Good, with Faron retitled and the extra tracks The Yearning Loins, He'll Have to Go and a Truckin' mix of Faron.

It reached number 21 in the UK and 178 on the US Billboard 200. Singles were When Love Breaks Down, Faron Young, Appetite and Johnny Johnny, which was Goodbye Lucille #1 under a new name. Reviewers were generous: AllMusic gave it five stars and called it a minor classic, and Spin called it Dolby's supreme achievement as a producer. NME ranked it fourth among the albums of 1985, and it appears on lists from the Times, Mojo and the Guardian.

Pitchfork's Stephen Troussé wrote in 2007 that McAloon has said the record is Dolby's, since he handed the producer a huge archive and asked him to pick favorites. Almost all of Dolby's choices dated from 1979, when McAloon was 22.
