McAloon wrote it in 1985 alongside Cars and Girls. The narrator is a washed-up singer who had a one-hit wonder in the 1950s with a novelty song whose chorus runs Hot dog, jumping frog, Albuquerque. McAloon saw its commercial potential early and expected it to surprise fans used to his more cerebral songs. Dolby produced it, and Pitchfork described its opening lines as the thoughts of an older touring musician singing the same words every night.

It was the second single from From Langley Park to Memphis and reached number 7 in the UK, spending 11 weeks on the chart. The band played it on Top of the Pops and Wogan. McAloon pointed out the irony of a song about a one-hit wonder being his only top ten single, and said he was reconciled to being remembered for it, like being known for Yellow Submarine rather than Hey Jude.
