Parade turned away from the guitars and rock of Purple Rain toward the psychedelic pop of Around the World in a Day, spare funk and soundtrack pieces. It is bookended by Christopher Tracy's Parade and Sometimes It Snows in April, both about the hero of the film, and it carries French lyrics and chanson arrangements that refer to the film's setting. Wendy Melvoin sings lead on I Wonder U, Marie France Drouin speaks on Girls & Boys, and an orchestra plays on several tracks. Kiss was the lead single.

The album reached number three on the Billboard 200 and number two on the R&B chart, was certified platinum in June 1986 and sold 2 million copies internationally. NME named it its album of the year for 1986. Simon Price of the Guardian called it the sound of Prince at his most effortless and assured, and ranked it second among his albums. The film won Golden Raspberry Awards, and Prince disbanded the Revolution after the Parade Tour.
