Second on Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, it was written by Eddy Arnold and Cindy Walker and is built on a string and vocal ensemble production. The narrator longs for a woman who sees him only as a friend. Bill Janovitz of AllMusic wrote that the genius, pathos and soul of Charles oozes into the recording. Pitchfork's Natalie Weiner picked it out among the weepy orchestral tunes on the album.
It was paired with Careless Love as a single in July 1962. It reached number 2 on the Hot 100 and number 5 on the R&B chart, topped the Easy Listening chart and reached number 9 in Britain.
