Navarro, formerly of Jane's Addiction, brought heavier riffs and at times a psychedelic sound. Flea wrote some lyrics for the first time, including Transcending and the intro and outro of Deep Kick, and sang lead on Pea. John Lurie played harmonica on the title track, and Flea's daughter Clara and her kindergarten class sing on Aeroplane. The album reached number four on the Billboard 200 and number two in the UK. My Friends went to number one on the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts.
Reviews were mixed to positive. Daina Darzin of Rolling Stone called it a ferociously eclectic and imaginative disc, while David Browne of Entertainment Weekly said it wails and flails like a mosh-pit workout tape.
