Californication

It was released as the lead single on May 25, 1999. Frusciante said he built the guitar line from two notes played far apart that make a cool rhythm, a technique he had used on his first solo album, and he plays slide guitar on the solos. Jim Scott said the slide part was overdubbed. The song reached number nine on the Hot 100 and number 15 in the UK, and it was added to the rotation of all 91 modern rock stations in the United States, the first song to manage that since U2's Discotheque.

Stéphane Sednaoui, who also directed Give It Away, made the video, with the band in a 1967 Pontiac Catalina convertible and Frusciante at the wheel. The song won the Grammy for Best Rock Song in 2000, and Guitar World placed the solo 63rd on its list of the 100 greatest guitar solos. Kerrang! ranked it third among the band's songs. Kiedis named his 2004 autobiography after it. The band first played it live in 1998, and it is their fifth most performed song.
