Mark Gardener wrote the lyric and sings it, with the music credited to all four. It was recorded with Marc Waterman at Blackwing in London and released as the second track of the Fall EP on 17 September 1990, then added to the CD of Nowhere. Ride had been playing it since 13 January 1990, at Rough Trade's Neal's Yard shop in London. Toppermost's Gareth Youngs read it as the story of a man who has cheated and won't tell his girlfriend.
PopMatters' AJ Ramirez called it an explosion of pop delight and, with Vapour Trail, an unbeatable pair; the Quietus's Richard Foster, in 2022, heard Ride by numbers. John Peel's listeners placed it 25th in the 1990 Festive Fifty, and in February 1991 it reached 24 on the American Modern Rock chart.
Live
It is Ride's second most played song, with more than five hundred performances on setlist.fm, and it was in the set in Valencia on 26 September 2026. Filmed versions come from the Town & Country Club in 1991 and Brixton Academy in 1992, and the Reading set of August 1992 includes it.
The upload in the hypersongs web is the official promo video.
