Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits came out on 14 June 1972, two years after the duo had disbanded. Most of it is original studio recordings, but four tracks are live. The live For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her and Kathy's Song are not dated on the packaging. The liner notes to Live 1969 place both at a November 1969 concert in St. Louis, while the Collected Works notes say Kathy's Song comes from a 1968 concert in Vermont. The 59th Street Bridge Song and Homeward Bound are also live.
America and Bookends appear for the first time with dry openings rather than crossfades, and Bridge over Troubled Water crossfades from the applause of the live track before it. A single of America, issued to promote the compilation, was first the B-side of the live For Emily.
