Peepshow was the first record by the band as a quintet, after multi-instrumentalist Martin McCarrick and guitarist Jon Klein joined. It was recorded between January and June 1988 at Marcus Studios in London with Mike Hedges producing, and cello and accordion are among its instruments. Three singles came from it: Peek-a-Boo on 18 July 1988, The Killing Jar on 19 September 1988 and The Last Beat of My Heart on 21 November 1988.
It reached number 20 in the UK and number 68 on the Billboard 200. Peek-a-Boo reached number one on Billboard's alternative chart. Q gave it five stars and wrote that it takes place in some distorted fairground of the mind. Samantha Bennett wrote a book about the album in the 33 1/3 series in 2018, and the band's last four studio albums, Peepshow among them, were reissued on CD with bonus tracks in October 2014.
