Indiscreet was released on Island in October 1975, nearly a year after Propaganda. Tony Visconti produced it and wrote the orchestral arrangements. It kept the glam rock sound of the two earlier Island albums but leaned into their theatrical side, drawing on jazz, big band, swing, vaudeville and classical music. Ron Mael wrote the songs, with Russell writing Pineapple.
It reached number 18 in the UK. The singles Get in the Swing and Looks, Looks, Looks reached numbers 27 and 26, and the moderate sales led the brothers to break up the British line-up and return to America. Pitchfork's Stuart Berman called Get in the Swing a circus-like parade that typified the excess of the period and proved more a funeral march for their commercial prospects. How Are You Getting Home? was later used in Leos Carax's film Holy Motors. Visconti returned to work with the band in 1997 on Plagiarism. The 1994 Island reissue added the B-side Profile and the non-album single I Wanna Hold Your Hand with its B-side England.
