"Down the Road" and "So Many Times" were recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami in September 1972, and the rest of the album followed in January 1973. Sessions began at Criteria, then moved to Caribou Ranch in Colorado and The Record Plant in Los Angeles, where Bill Halverson and Malcolm Cecil engineered. Joe Walsh played slide guitar and Bobby Whitlock Hammond B3 organ among the guests, and "City Junkies" grew from a jam with Whitlock and Dallas Taylor to which Stills added new words.

Atlantic rejected some tracks, which meant re-recording, and the record has a patchwork quality. The album was released on April 23, 1973 and peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard chart. "Isn't It About Time" was the lead single and reached No. 56. Rolling Stone was critical of the record. Richard Williams of Melody Maker wrote in 1973 that the two Latin songs were the best and that he would like to see "Pensamiento" become a hit.

Stills supported the album with two tours and an appearance on ABC's In Concert series on April 16, 1973. The band ended after the tour that finished in October 1973.
