Genesis made Foxtrot in scattered sessions between tour dates. Bob Potter produced the early sessions without credit and Tony Platt briefly took over before Dave Hitchcock finished it, with John Burns engineering. Every track is credited to Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Hackett and Rutherford, and Hackett played electric, six-string and twelve-string guitars. It reached 12 in Britain, then the band's best placing. Chris Welch in Melody Maker called it a milestone in the group's career, and Rolling Stone ranked it 14th among the greatest progressive rock albums in 2015. Hackett has said that, taken whole, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound are the two best Genesis albums.
