Today was released by EMI on 21 June 1982 as the third single from The Party's Over. It was the band's first top-twenty hit and peaked at fourteen on the UK Singles Chart. The seven-inch ran 3:13 with It's So Serious on the B-side. The twelve-inch ran 4:27. It's So Serious was taken from a BBC radio session recorded for the David Jensen Show in November 1981. The single version was included on the 1997 compilation The Very Best of Talk Talk as Today (Single Version). Hollis wrote the lyrics, and the music is credited to all four members of the group.

Adrian Thrills of the NME wrote on release that it was "wispy synthipop meets candyfloss psychedelia," and said that Hollis's "distinctive, dreamy vocal delivery" gave it a chance. Alexis Petridis recalled the band singing it on Top of the Pops to an audience wearing deely-boppers.
