The group first tried it straight, but it did not sound right to Robertson. Helm moved to mandolin, Manuel to drums, Danko to fiddle and Hudson to ragtime-style upright piano, with John Simon on tuba and Robertson on electric guitar. Helm sings. Robertson said it had little importance until they recorded it, but that it showed something else they could do. Dr. John said it sounded like a cross between Memphis and New Orleans.
The single reached 57 in the United States and 16 in Britain, the highest placing of any single by the group. Cash Box said it had the rhythmic enthusiasm and sound appeal of Up on Cripple Creek. A live version of 4:33 is on Rock of Ages.
