I Get Around
The band's first US number 1, about finding a new place where the kids are hip.
The Beach Boys (1964)
- Written by
- Brian Wilson, Mike Love
- Released
- 11 May 1964
Brian Wilson wrote it, and Mike Love got a co-writing credit after the lawsuits of the 1990s that gave him credits on 35 songs. Wilson said in court that he wrote it apart from a possible chance that Love wrote the intro. Love said he tinkered with Brian's first verse, which had been about a bored kid driving around, and made it about the band's own instant fame. The lyric describes boredom with the same old strip and a wish to find a new place where the kids are hip. Love based the a cappella intro on the Regents' Barbara-Ann.
The backing track was recorded on 2 April 1964 at Western Studios, the first session for the album All Summer Long, and the last overdubs were done on 10 April. Murry Wilson disrupted the instrumental session, and by one account the group then fired him as manager, though Love wrote that he had already been dismissed a couple of months earlier. Dennis Wilson played drums, Carl Wilson the lead and rhythm guitars, and Al Jardine the bass, with Brian on piano, harpsichord and organ.
The single, backed with Don't Worry Baby, came out on 11 May 1964. It entered the Top 40 at number 17 on 6 June and reached number 1 on 4 July 1964 for two weeks, their first chart-topping US hit. In Britain it reached number 7, their first UK top ten. The album All Summer Long opened with it on 13 July. James Perone wrote that the song was a successful reply by Wilson to the British Invasion and the start of an unofficial rivalry with the Beatles. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2017, and 2,580 logged setlists include it.
