Harrison wrote it in April 1969 at Eric Clapton's house in Ewhurst, Surrey, after skipping a business meeting at Apple. In I, Me, Mine he said the relief of not having to see all those accountants was wonderful. He played it with a capo on the seventh fret in the key of A.
The rhythm track was taped on 7 July 1969 in 13 takes, followed by harmonium and handclaps on 16 July, guitar through a Leslie speaker on 6 August, the orchestra on 15 August and Moog on 19 August. Harrison sang and played guitars, harmonium, Moog and handclaps, McCartney sang backing vocals and played bass, and Starr played drums. Lennon was absent after a car crash.
Afterlife
It is the most-streamed Beatles song on Spotify and passed one billion plays in May 2023. Richie Havens took it to number 16 in the United States in 1971, and Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel reached number 10 in Britain with it in 1976. It was played at the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. EMI's objection kept it off the Voyager Golden Record in 1977.
