Pitchfork called it the song that opened the creative floodgates for Hats. Buchanan's guitar carries hints of Nile Rodgers' palm-muted funk, the strings are woven closely around the words, and the album version closes with him listing the sights of the city. The Pittsburgh Press heard a tale of longing and fulfilment in the big city.

The lead single from Hats, edited to 4:40, reached 67 in the UK and 10 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, the band's only American chart entry, and its video went into MTV's Buzz Bin. Melody Maker made it the fifteenth best single of 1989.

Live and after

It was in 18 of the band's 57 logged sets, first at the Bottom Line in New York in July 1990. Annie Lennox and Rod Stewart both recorded it in 1995, and Chvrches, Small Black and Keane's Tom Chaplin have followed. Matty Healy said the 1975's Love It If We Made It was based on it. When Taylor Swift named it in Guilty as Sin? in 2024, its streams rose by 1,400 percent and the band's website sold out of vinyl. The upload in the hypersongs web is the full album version, not the single edit.
